We're Open to Traveling!

This morning our heads were spinning still trying to figure out the best way forward for my treatment.

Up to this point, we haven’t heard back from my referred surgeon at Roger Maris and Jarod and I both were honestly getting a little antsy.  We also hadn’t seen or heard about the official released CT Scan.  [Can we get these things going please?]

In the meantime, we were continuing to do what we could to understand the diagnosis and the implications on treatment and what it would mean for our lives in the short term.  Jarod continued to read study after study.

The Connection

Last night, Jarod mentioned my diagnosis to his boss out in New York.  His boss, Paul called him right away in the morning to talk about it and was curious if we were treating in Fargo, or if we were considering treatment anywhere else around the country.  Jarod indicated that we were open to going anywhere we needed to in order to get this treated as well as possible.

Paul was glad to hear of our willingness to travel for the treatment – and he spoke up right away mentioning that he is really good friends with a few of the chief oncologists at Memorial Sloan Kettering and that he had the utmost confidence in their ability to take my case.  We had heard great things about MSK and other than doubts of fitting into a trip to New York into our schedules quickly, (and would they be able to see me quickly?) we knew this would be a desirable option for us to pursue.

Memorial Sloan Kettering

In any case I am thankful for the connections Paul setup as it sounds promising.  We called Memorial Sloan Kettering this morning and got registered as a patient.  It sounds like they need a bunch of information from my doctors in Fargo, so we've been feverishly working on that, calling the release of information department and nurses to try and get them all of the needed info.

Hopefully they can move quickly as it could mean a wait as long as two weeks after the records are received before we'd get a consultation scheduled.  How quickly could we get the surgery on the calendar?

Lots to think about. For now at least we still have the consultation with the surgeon in Fargo if things move too slowly at MSK.

Love Your Buns is a non-profit initiative aiming to remove stigma and improve awareness around rectal cancer, its prevalence and its symptoms. A growing epidemic in young adults, rectal cancer is easy to remove if caught early, however due to a variety of reasons, young adults are not likely to seek screening options like colonoscopies. This gap in screening is leading to more advanced disease at diagnosis and more challenging and strenuous treatment. We're working to Educate young adults to increase awareness of the signs and increasing prevalence of Rectal Cancer and to Empower informed decision making and Improve quality of life in Survivorship.
